2 designer timeline
spring 2023
TASK
In my History of Graphic Design class, our final project was to develop an accordion timeline around the work and lives of 2 prominent designers (one assigned to us and one chosen). The timeline had to include 10 major events from each of the designers lives and careers in addition to 10 relevant historic events and 10 graphic design events. How we combined these 4 stories and created the visual language was up to us to decide.
process
The designer I was assigned was Ruth Ansel, one of the most notable graphic designers in the editorial fashion world. For my second designer, I chose American Fashion Designer Virgil Abloh. The combination of these designers worked well for this project because of their work in the fashion industry. When choosing the visual language, I decided to have different fonts representing the different designers. The classic and editorial looking Didot for Ruth Ansel and the more modern and structured Forma for Abloh. Each branch of the timeline had a color encoded to it (pink for Ansel, green for Abloh, blue for graphic design history, and orange for world history) which appeared as blocks in the background of the images. For the layout, I mimicked the editorial look and feel of Ruth Ansel’s work. To keep the timeline easy to digest and have a strong flow, I kept the events of Ansel and Abloh prominent towards the top of the pages and the graphic design and historic events smaller and towards the bottom.
